OOTT Spring Transition inspired

Transitioning from winter to spring is much easier when you live in more “seasonable” climates…not so much here in frigid Canada! But I can still hope! In the meantime, I am squirreling away transition pieces for when the temps allow it. As always, I endeavor to shows as many pieces from affordable stores. When buying clothes from more value-priced stores, remember good fit and fabrics are key to avoid looking “cheap”.  No poly blends! Try to mix with more luxe items to bump up style quotient- check out my business casual outfit of the day!

Organix Awapuhi Ginger Review

It does smell aaaaahhhhmaazzing! And that initial sniff in the store gets me every time! I wanted to love this product, it’s creamy and smells like…Maui but it’s all sniff…no soft. I have used it twice now, while it contains keratin and supposed to repair and strengthen dry, coarse hair…it left my hair smelling great but more coarse than before when wet. I like my hair to feel silky after conditioning and this just didn’t do it. I will try it once more in a couple days, just to give it one more shot. But for now, it’s a C- in my books. #organix, #hair, #awaphuiginger

“I think my 12-year-old is taller than you!

dressupgirls

That’s when those under 5’3 loose it and grab a fork to try to stab the dumbass who said that in the eye. I’ve got your back my petite ladies! I’ve got some ideas for you to make the most of your best attributes and get people to stop focusing so much on your height.

Can’t find clothes that “fit”….well you are not alone in that. EVERYONE struggles to find the right fit. I do agree petites can have a tougher time as not only do they need pant hemming but sleeve hemming to rise of pants can also be issues. Looking polished and professional can be challenging when everyone is patting you on the head and telling you how ‘cute’ you are because of your diminutive size. Cheer up my vertically challenged friends; I have a few suggestions that might help.

First of all, Ladies, please accept your height….if you are over 20 years old, this is it. And you are likely only going to get shorter later in life. Deal with it and FIND A GOOD TAILOR!!! A good tailor can make you look like a million bucks and not like you are playing dress up in Mommy’s clothes. This is the most important thing you can do to look polished. The tailor can work with you, explaining what alterations are worth the investment and what aren’t based on the garment. Keep all your receipts, if the tailor can’t make it fit like a glove….return it.

Petites come in all body types as well, so be aware of your proportions but pay close attention to what you can fix through tailoring and what is not worth the price of tailoring. Generally speaking if the rise of the pants is good, e.g. the waist is not up under you armpits, tailoring the hem, no biggie. But if the rise is wrong, don’t bother altering the rise and waist unless you love the pants and can’t live without them, the cost of those alterations too expensive to have to rework the whole pant.

Shopping in petite department…based on my limited anecdotal observations, the petites sections seem to be designed for Grandmas who love poly-blend blouses, well in Canada at least. Good lord, what a bunch of crap. Come on designers there are plenty of women consider petites who would LOVE to pick up a blazer, without sloping shoulders, too long sleeves and have a supposed hip length blazers that hit mid-thigh. If you are shorter and are blessed with a low BMI and smaller bust line, consider picking up you blazers in the boys departments (size 12-14) of Brooks Brothers or Zara…..they have cute styles that will fit!

Do’s
• Show off your gams! Buy skirts (or hem them) an inch above knee length
• Colour! One colour H2T visually pulls eye vertically giving illusion of height
• Mid-calf boots- they elongate leg
• Heels- no Lady Gaga 9 inch heels please…a pointy toe nude pump 2 inch heels is perfect for long legs
• Accessories! Scarfs, earrings and statement or bib style necklace pull attention to your beautiful face
• Mid-size bags- cross body’s look chic and are size appropriate
• Skinny, slim or straight cut jeans keep you looking long and lean

Don’ts
• Just say NO to parkas- or any oversize….anything. Unless you want to look 5.
• Large handbags or totes- again only drawing attention to your size
• No large belts
• No boot cut jeans

Check out these lines….
• Allison Izu-allisonizu.com
• Joe’s Jeans- The Provocateur Cut
• Paige Premium Denim
• J Crew
• H&M- no petite line but cuts on small size
• BCBG- no petite line, pants long, but petite friendly

Spring 2014 Top 3 Trends to Try

God willing, spring is just around the corner…while we may be snuggled in sweaters now it’s a good time to add a few fresh pieces to our wardrobe. Now, to be clear, do not be a slave to trends! I hate when I see people head to toe with 4 plus trendy items. To stay fresh (and economical) just add a few new pieces to your existing wardrobe.  Here’s the top 3 trends this season…according to moi anyway!

image

1. Pretty Pastels- I know…pastels at spring…groundbreaking. But some of the colours are so luxe and gorg, just keep it simple with clean lines for a more sophisticated look.

Hey Ballerinas! Rectangle Body Shapes are long and lean.

The_Ballerina_IV_-_EBSQ

Are you a ballerina? I bet you’ve been asked that, if you are rectangle body shape. Rejoice in your body, talk about long lines! Guess what MOST women are rectangles (over 40%), the problem with rectangles is when you gain weight your body can take on the appearance of another body type eg. Apple, sometimes it is hard to tell. Measure and look at your shoulder and hip widths to know forsure

How to tell if you are a rectangle? You are well proportioned- waist, hip and shoulder are same width, slim limbs and small hips. You can easily look naturally athletic, a little boyish in frame, and tend to have a regular sized or small bust. Well-endowed rectangles do exist but are not as common- most rectangles with large bust lines are cosmetically enhanced. You are probably the easiest to dress of all the body types.
Defining your waistline, show off your gams and slim arms – your top priority is to create curves!

Do’s
• Long neck and small chest? Choose higher necklines- shirts with bust ruffles, ruching, etc…
• Bring that sexy back- back! Show off back, arms and shoulders as an alternative to cleavage.
• Larger chest? Try a V-necks, boat necks, button downs, sweetheart necks, scoop necks and wrap tops.
• Medium width belt try blousoning a blouse with a belt to create shape
• Straight sheath dresses and shirt dresses but look equally good in bias cuts.
• Wear a tight pencil skirt to create curves.
• Your body was made for jeans! Especially skinny ones
• Want a more fashion forward look-high-waisted harem pants, slouchy wide-hipped looks that taper at the leg.
• A-line skirts
• If you have a short leg line, add heels and you’re good to go.

Don’ts
• Wear overwhelming styles
• Wear large belts- especially if you are short waisted

I don’t know about you…no matter how happy I am with a mascara…I am always on the hunt for an upgrade. I am the philanderer of mascara, I admit it! My holy grail has been Maybelline’s Falsies and I have been faithful for a couple years but I have been eyeballing Benefit’s They’re Real for awhile now and I just couldn’t resist any more. Since I was straying anyway I  thought I would test a few brands. I headed to Sephora, and picked up the Benefit They’re Real for $30, then off to Superstore to pick up Loreal Voluminous Million Lashes for $10, and the lowest price point the Milani Runway Lashes for $5.

I have fairly long lashes but they have gotten thin and sparse over the past 10 years, I need volume! And I have been using Maybelline for a couple years, and very happy with it, but I thought it was time to try something new.

Was it worth it to stray? Here’s the reviews…

1. #Benefit They’re Real- I wanted to love this mascara but I just “like” it…love the wet formula, hate the plastic brush, but like the spiked end, love the length, great lash seperation, but not quite enough volume. I give it a B.

2. #Loreal Voluminous Million Lashes- Another wet mascara, again hate the plastic brush/mini comb wand, good length, minimal volume and it flakes! It’s OK, C-.

3. #Milani Runway Lashes- traditional mascara formula, wand was fibre based- which is a plus for me, found it to be a tad clumpy, but good buildable formula. Not bad, especially for the price. Solid C+ in my book, you get what you pay for.

Verdict? Going back to old faithful, Maybelline? Not entirely… I will use the Benefit They’re Real as a base coat and top with The Falsies to thicken, looks false lashes! WOW, looks like I get to have my cake and eat it too!

And I combined the Loreal and Milani today, and liked them together too! So…I guess they all are winners- just not on their own.

Body of the Week- Apple Shaped Beauties

Ladies dressing for your body type means you are highlighting your best assests and taking the focus off other areas that are not your favourite, while creating a body line that is in proportion, which is most pleasing to the eye. Humans desire symmetry- we are genetically programmed to desire it.

Unsure as to what type you have? There are 4 universal types (and many variations of each type) but generally speaking there are 4 main shapes- apple, pear, hourglass, and ruler (banana)- now there are tall, petite, plus size and athletic verisions as well, but let’s focus on the 4 main types for our purposes today. A study of the shapes of over 6,000 women, carried out by researchers at the North Carolina State University circa 2005, found that 46% were banana (rectangular), just over 20% pear, just under 14% apple, and 8% hourglass. Today we are focusing on dressing our lovely apple shaped ladies!

Here are some other characteristics of the apple-shaped body:
•Wide torso
•Broad shoulders
•An average-to-fuller bust
•An undefined waist
•Thinner arms and legs
•A flat bottom
•Hips that are narrower than your bust
•You don’t have to have a very large belly to be apple shaped — it just means that your center of gravity, or your extra weight, resides in your belly area.

Body types are inheritied just like your hair and eye colour and no matter what you do, unless massive amounts of steriods or plastic surgery are involved, you will always the same body type-just larger or smaller versions of it. Each are beautiful in their own right and yes, we all have things we are not overly pleased with, but dressing to suit your shape can bring the focus to the best of you.

Do’s
– Go bohemian with tops/dresses- just make sure they float away from body under bustline- EMPIRE WAISTLINES my Queen!
– Draw attention to your fab ta-ta’s! Highlight your bust- no need for necklaces or busy patterns- skip the adornments and wear a simple v-neck. plunging necklines, and scoop necks
– GAMS! Ladies you usually posses super smokin legs. Wear minis, shorts and heels
– A shirt or dress that has a tie at the waist will also help add definition to your figure
– Your tops should fall lower than your hip bones
– You can wear a long flowing top that falls below your bottom, like a tunic shirt
– Choose a top with pretty shoulder details, like sequins or flowers
– Bias cut or an A-line, or flatter your figure with a full circle skirt
– Jackets with nipped in waist for structure
– Pants with back pockets- emphasize your booty
– Denim- trouser cut, flared, wide-legs, or boot cut.

Don’t’s
– Avoid low rise shorts or pants- only draws attention to belly
– High-cut shirts- turtlenecks are a no go!
– Crop tops
– Thick belts
– Clingy fabrics or boxy fabrics that lack definition
– If doing a skinny jean use a lighter wash or coloured denim to add dimension to legs
– Avoid skirts that are tight around the waist or which fall at your natural waist

Apple Beauties! I picked out a casual weekend look that is affordable and adorbs (under $130 for ALL items!) just for your body shape at #OldNavy and items are from spring line, so should be in a local store near you or on the web….check it out! It works beacuse the skinny pants are army green with back pockets, a sweatshirt with a muted print with a slight scoop neck, that floats away from the body, the jacket provides structure and the dark colour helps to minimize the wasitline. The scarf pulls the eye vertically and a sparkle flat bring texture and shine to the outfit.
